Church History
Union Memorial Baptist Church incorporated, formerly deeded as Baptist church for colored people 298 E. Green St. Westminster, Md. was erected in 1881.
This church began in a wooded area near Willow Street in Westminster, Md. at that time Mrs. Priscilla Thompson was the pillar of the church. There were blacks living near Willow street and residing in slave quarters. According to a news item about the Union Church of Westminster dated June·16, 1883 at the Historical Society of Carroll County: "The fathers and grandfathers of the present generation used to worship there and contributed their weekly mites in the silken purse that was attached to a long handle and passed around. The men used to sit on one side and the women would sit on the other. The gallery on the east side was set apart for colored people. As we travel on we will try to recapture some of those soldiers of the Lord that have passed on. We may not have their entire names but I'm sure someone will know them or have heard their names mentioned. According to the land records at the Carroll County land office, Westminster, Md. the parcel of land for the church was acquired as follows-

The old Union Church of Westminster.
"Colored people" were seated in the east gallery.
